As I sat at my computer wondering what my newsletter topic was going to be this month, I came across a list of items I could write about. As I scanned the list this particular topic jumped out at me, partly because I am a woman but another part was more that my ignorance of the subject of IWD had me intrigued about learning more.
I also strongly believe in building up others and empowering not only women but people in general. It really reminded me how much stronger we are together as a community and how helping others is a big part of our jobs.
Here are some facts about International Womens Day that I found interesting:
IWD was born on March 8, 1908, but the first event wasn’t held until 1911 and the UN officially recognized it as a holiday in 1975.
Women’s Day is a combined holiday with Mother’s Day in some places like Macedonia & Albania.
Women are inventors behind the scenes – Mary Anderson invented the windshield wiper in 1903.
Women perceive more smells – Because we have always been in a position to cook & take care of others, we have evolved to become more sensitive to scents and smells.
Women are better conversationalists – Women are considerably better than men at reading faces, gestures, and voice tones. This makes us champion conversationalists and social leaders.
Heels were not originally made for women – Heels were introduced to women’s fashion in the 1600s to mimic the men who wore heels as a sign of their masculinity. Soon after men stopped wearing heels.
There are more stay-at-home men than women in the US – In the US, there are approximately 2,09,000 men who stay at home.
The first computer programmer was a woman – Ada Lovelace was the first person to recognize the full potential of a computing machine. She was one of the first computer programmers in the world.
The number of women is higher in Russia – There is a whopping 9 million more women in Russia than men.
In 1978, Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
